What is Revival?
The word revival has to do with Christians. Scripture reveals that revival happens to believers, not the lost. A friend of Dale says, "You have to be vived, before you can be revived." Here are a couple of definitions:

"That strange and sovereign work of God in which He visits His own people, restoring, reanimating, and releasing them into the fullness of His blessing." (Stephen Olford)

"The renewal of the first love of Christians, resulting in the awakening and conversion of sinners…It reclaims the backslidden church, and awakens all classes." (Charles Finney)

"The inrush of the Holy Spirit into that which threatens to become a corpse." (D. M. Patton)

Corporate revival is what occurs to a single church, or a group of churches in a city, a state, indeed an entire country, which in turns draws the lost to Christ and impacts the culture.

The outstanding result of corporate revival is that it always spills out of the church. For example, so strong was the revival of 1904 in Wales, that for one year there were no court cases to prosecute in the entire country, because of the effects of the revival.

Is corporate revival really necessary?
If by "necessary" you mean that individual Christians cannot obey God, preach the gospel, pray, and make disciples as our Lord commanded, the answer is a resounding no! A national revival is not necessary for members of the Body of Christ (the church) to be fruitful, beautiful, and Christ-honoring. An individual Christian or a Church may, by God's grace and power, live in a way that is pleasing, fruitful, and honoring to Him without macro-revivals in our land.

If by "necessary" you mean, "Does much of the Christian church of America stand in desperate need of a new work of God 's Holy Spirit across the church at large?" then the answer is a resounding yes! If we as Christians were truly sold out to God's kingdom purposes, our families, churches, cities, and nation would be dramatically different. If organizational drift were replaced by a white-hot love for Jesus Christ, the church would begin to resemble the beautiful bride that Christ died to make her.

Revivals are not God's only means for advancing the kingdom of Christ. But when the church is found wanting, like much of the American church today is, then revival is not only desirable but necessary and indeed urgent.

Can I experience personal revival even if God is not pleased to send a great revival to multitudes?
There is no reason whatsoever for any believer to remain in sin or to live a life of frustration and spiritual deadness. At the same time, suggesting that there are formulas that, if followed, will inevitably bring revival is a prescription for massive failure and profound frustration. The believer should always confess sin, seek after God with the whole heart, pray for the empowering of the Holy Spirit, and implicitly trust Christ every day.

What are some of the activities that you have engaged in during these last years?
One of the activities that has been most effective has been the conducting of pastor's retreats. These retreats, built around the theme of "Preparing For Revival," have resulted in numerous cities coming together to create "The Church of..." For example, the Church of Hawaii, or the Church of Ottumwa. (See the covenant which the Church of Hawaii created. To view this PDF document, you will need the free Acrobat Reader.)

This coming together, crossing racial and denominational boundaries, has resulted in the Church of Jesus Christ praying and working together in a whole new way, in cities all over America. Such retreats have been held in Texas, Iowa, Maine, New Hampshire, Hawaii, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania. These retreats have led to our being asked back to certain areas on a repeated basis, to assist the pastors in being holy and in bringing the message of revival to their region.

Liz and Dale have also led, what they call, a "Seminar and Laboratory On Prayer," for local churches. These usually are held on a Friday night and Saturday. Since there is no recorded instance of corporate revival without accompanying corporate prayer, this issue becomes key in preparing for revival. These seminars have been used to take churches to a new depth regarding the issue of prayer. Liz also has done consulting with churches to assist them in turning their church into a "house of prayer for the nations."

Preaching missions has also been a part of our activity over the last years. We have found that the longer the time given in days the greater the impact. It appears to take time before people can actually hear and recognize the perilous condition they are in.
